The force

As the winner of (*) UK Police Service of the Year 2021 in the Public Sector Transformation Awards, Essex Police is a dynamic and diverse place to work. A force that has been recognised as ‘exceptional’ in respecting victims of crime, with record levels of public trust and confidence, we are a force that continually finds new and innovative ways to tackle crime and protect our communities.

Prevention is at the heart of what we want to do in order to Protect and Serve Essex working with partners across the county as part of the Safer Essex Partnership.

Our force plan sets out our priorities that are informed by the Police and Crime Plan and the National Beating Crime Plan. However, our main effort can be described as tackling Violence, supporting and safeguarding Victims, identifying and dealing with Vulnerability and making sure that there is Visibility of all we do to build public trust and confidence.

We are a growing force that has seen an additional 800 new officers and 150 new staff join our strength in the past 4 years. We have strong operational capabilities from our Serious Crime Directorate shared with Kent in addition to our specialist operational capabilities, Local policing and first-class support and enabling services. Supplementing this is the UK’s second largest special constabulary who received a Queens Award for Voluntary Service this year and over 1200 other volunteers and active citizens.

Building and maintaining the trust of the public is essential to us and we are currently seeing the highest levels of public trust in 5 years. Equally supporting and valuing our staff and being an inclusive place to work is a key priority with our diversity strategy and #WeValueDifference approach seeing us progress our recruitment, our diversity and the progression of all of our people.

We are looking for leaders who share our vision to protect people, keep people safe and to do even more to prevent crime. We have excellent relationships with partners and with local and national elected representatives, who support our growth and our drive for professionalism and excellence in all we do.

Within the last 2 years we have created an additional ACC post, invested in the careers of senior colleagues in all commands and congratulated our former DCC on her success in becoming the Chief Constable of another force.
